Farms and other businesses which handle small quantities of low-risk waste can register free exemptions as long as they meet certain limits and conditions.
New rules came into effect in 2013 and many farmers will have registered for the three year exemptions at that time. These will be expiring soon, if not already, and will need renewing to ensure continued compliance. If you have never registered before then it is highly recommended that you do so now. The exemptions cover activities such as:
- Using road planings or rubble in tracks and gateways
- Burning hedge trimmings in the open
- Using old tyres on a silage clamp
The Environment Agency recommend that farmers register their waste exemptions online and they can do so by visiting www.gov.uk/guidance/register-your-waste-exemptions-environmental-permits.
